Nepal Seasons and Weather Guide

Nepal Seasons and Weather Guide

Spring (March to May)
Spring is one of the most beautiful times to visit Nepal. Temperatures are warm in the lowlands and comfortably cool in the mountains. This season offers clear mountain views and vibrant blooms—especially the rhododendron, Nepal’s national flower, which colors the hillsides in red, pink, and white.

Summer/Monsoon (June to August)
Summer in Nepal coincides with the monsoon. Expect hot, humid days with frequent rain, especially in the evenings. While trekking is challenging due to wet trails, the rain brings lush greenery to the valleys. Some Himalayan regions like Mustang, Manang, and Dolpo lie in the rain shadow and remain relatively dry.

Autumn (September to November)
Autumn is Nepal’s peak travel season. The weather is clear, dry, and pleasant, making it ideal for trekking and sightseeing. Crystal-clear skies offer stunning Himalayan views. It’s also festival time—Dashain and Tihar fill the country with celebration and culture. Flights and lodges book out early, so plan ahead.

Winter (December to February)
Winters are cool with crisp air and occasional snow in higher elevations. Lower altitude treks are still very enjoyable, especially with clear skies and warm daytime sun. Mornings and nights can be chilly, especially in the mountains.

Temperature & Rainfall in Kathmandu

  • Spring: 16–23°C (61–73°F)

  • Summer: 23–25°C (73–77°F)

  • Autumn: 15–24°C (59–75°F)

  • Winter: 9–12°C (48–54°F)

During monsoon (June–August), Kathmandu receives about 200–375 mm of rainfall. The yearly average is around 1300 mm.

Travel Tip

Monsoon rains in Nepal often fall at night, clearing the sky by morning and revealing dramatic Himalayan vistas. Trekking in rain-shadow areas like Mustang, Manang, and Dolpo is a great alternative. Interestingly, this rainy season aligns with Tibet’s prime travel period too.

Traditional costume of Nepal

Traditional costume of Nepal Talking about traditional costume of Nepal it would be right to say not "costume" but "costumes" because though Nepal is a small country there are many ethnic groups living here and each group has their unique traditional dress. I will tell about a few that I find most interesting. The Newars . This ethnic group has many different styles of dress among themselves but there is one common thing - they prefer combinations of black and red colours. The most common seen Newar woman's dress is the   hakku potashi , a black sari with red borders. Young girls wear it knee level,  but older women prefer to completely cover their legs. The sari is complimented by a white   patuka  wrapped aroud the waist and a cotton shawl wrapped diagonally over the blouse. Men wear a double-breasted shirt ( daura ) with flaps fastened by ties diagonally across the chest, and tight trousers called  suruwal . The costume c...
